Its been two long years since we handed out the Best of Lounge awards. The global pandemic pulled the rug out from all of us and sadly, we lost many friends, family, & yes, even some of our favorite watering holes. We thought it would be the new Roaring Twenties but the decade got stalled in the starting gates. So 2022, a year when COVID was still taking its toll but, fully boosted, we started venturing out more. New joints began to pop up and a limited sense of normalcy began to take root.

In the spirit of new beginnings, we went out on the town in many cities across the country with old and new friends. In NYC, the Loungerati revisited some classic dining and drinking stalwarts like Balthazar, Minetta Tavern, Gallagher's Steakhouse, Blue Ribbon, Grand Central Oyster Bar, Bemelmans, Heidelberg Restaurant, El Quijote at Chelsea Hotel, Smith & Wollensky, and of course the venerable Bamonte's. Happy New Year Loungers! Best for 2013!

Buon Capo D'Anno from Loungerati!
Happy New Year Loungers! We enter Loungerati's 7th year with optimism and a renewed vigor. I hope your festivities were successful, safe, and classy. 2012 was a fine year for the team and included such noteworthy highlights as:
  • The 1st annual Loungerati Beefsteak Dinner at Maloney & Porcelli for the staff and selected stalwarts of their craft.(pictured)
  • Loungerati field trip to London for a visit to award winning watering holes The American Bar at Savoy Hotel and the Artesian at Langham Hotel were the standouts.
  • Contributing to Umamimart's Happy Hour for the third year, special nod to the Paystyles, Vanessa, and Kayoko for bringing me into the family.
  • Another year of Loungerati curated cocktail menus at the following swank affairs: Sweetheart's Soiree at Bogardus Mansion, The Salon's Silver Screen at Rebel, The Liberty Belle Spectacular July 4th Extravaganza at Empire Hotel, and The Salon's 5th Annual New Year's Eve EVE party at the DL.
  • Special acknowledgement and gratitude to the following bar industry pros who stood toe-to-toe and supported us at these events: Eryn Reece, Nino Cirabisi, Kenneth McCoy, Michael Neff, Brian Quinn, and bar staffs at the former Lani Kai, Pouring Ribbons, Silver Lining,The Rum House, and Ward III.
  • We look forward the opening of the re-located Milk & Honey, the Dead Rabbit Grocery & Grog, Golden Cadillac, and Attaboy bars in 2013!
As tradition calls for, I leave you with the inspiring words delivered by the Senator, one of Loungerati's founding members, at the first Lounge Summit at the Algonquin Hotel in November 2007:
"We shall drink to the end, we shall drink in the morning, we shall drink in the night, we shall drink in the gutters and the streets, we shall drink in the hills, ... we shall order after dinner drinks and digestifs, no matter what the cost, we shall never throw up, and even if we do, which I do not for a moment believe, we shall boot and rally and make it to the last call!
And so my fellow Loungers, in closing, let the word go forth that the torch has been passed [from] an older generation. Let every dancer, lounger, and barfly know, whether they wish us well or premium, gin or beer, whiskey or soda, that we shall pay any cover, tip any bartender, meet any manager or maestro, in order to assure the survival and the success of the lounge.
All the best for the New Year!

Happy New Year! We are going on hiatus.

Fredo at The Salon's New Year's Eve Eve (photo G. Porter)
Happy New Year Loungers! I hope your festivities were successful, safe, and classy. Loungerati will be going on hiatus for the next month or two while I decide on the next phase of this project. We have hit the five year mark and growth is necessary to keep Loungerati fresh and worthwhile for the community. That said, 2011 was a tremendous year for the team and included such noteworthy highlights as:
Hopefully, Loungerati can return with a 2.0 version that will expand beyond the current blog format. Only time and commitment can tell. So until we are back, I leave you with the inspiring words delivered by the Senator, one of Loungerati's founding members, at the first Lounge Summit at the Algonquin Hotel in November 2007:

"We shall drink to the end, we shall drink in the morning, we shall drink in the night, we shall drink in the gutters and the streets, we shall drink in the hills, ... we shall order after dinner drinks and digestifs, no matter what the cost, we shall never throw up, and even if we do, which I do not for a moment believe, we shall boot and rally and make it to the last call!

And so my fellow Loungers, in closing, let the word go forth that the torch has been passed [from] an older generation. Let every dancer, lounger, and barfly know, whether they wish us well or premium, gin or beer, whiskey or soda, that we shall pay any cover, tip any bartender, meet any manager or maestro, in order to assure the survival and the success of the lounge."

Til the next whiskey sours,

Destinations: A Homage to Harlem Glamour presented by Bootlegger 21 - April 16th

Michael Arenella and Adam Aleksander have partnered with locally produced award winning Bootlegger 21 Vodka to put together a legendary evening to remember. So put on your finest duds and jump on the Dreamland Orchestra time machine back to yesteryear.

Bootlegger 21 Vodka presents…

AN HOMAGE TO HARLEM GLAMOUR
A one-night celebration of Harlem glamour
Saturday, April 16th, 2011
76 Wooster Street, Soho
9:00pm til Late
$25 (Advance tickets only - available here)
*First 100 guests receive a free drink ticket!*

Produced by Michael Arenella and Adam Aleksander

An Homage to Harlem Glamour is reincarnated for one night in a four-story Soho townhouse. Featuring an All-Star program of hot music and dance, decadent Bootlegger 21 cocktails, gourmet hors d'oeuvres, real casino games, fresh hand-rolled cigars and an after-hours lounge offering further unspeakable delights.

Downstairs - the joint is jumpin’ with live hot jazz, starring Michael Arenella and his Dreamland Orchestra
in front of a REAL WOOD dance floor. In addition an All-Star program of tap dance, risqué follies and floorshow revue is in store. Document your night of frivolity in our vintage-style photo booth. Gorgeous cigarette girls strolling the club offer candies, gifts, and - cigarettes.

In the upstairs lounge – while our lovely chanteuse and piano-man set the mood, guests are invited to try a hand at poker, craps and blackjack with fabulous prizes, enjoy fresh cigars hand-rolled on premises, and other surprises.

Harlem was, at the frenzied height of the Jazz Age, the Mecca of all that swung, shook and shimmered. At once an emblem of status and taboo, sophistication and lust, it was a cocktail of well-heeled “high hatters” in search of a deviant thrill mixed with the exotic, jazz-fueled pulse of Harlem night culture.

Starring acclaimed bandleader

Michael Arenella and His Dreamland Orchestra

Featuring

Queen Esther – renowned chanteuse with piano-man Jesse Gelber
Gin Minsky – adorable flapper-tapper
Ginger Brown - Burlesque songbird
Roddy Caravella and the Harlem Glamour Revue

Bootlegger 21 New York Vodka cocktails crafted by Fredo from Loungerati.com and Miguel Aranda of Apotheke.

Fine hand-rolled Dominican/Nicaraguan blend cigars by Maraya.

Gourmet hors d'oeuvres by Sonora Events.

See you there!

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas! Buon Natale! Joyeux Noël!

For Christmas we will be making an Egg Nog cocktail that Jerry Thomas made famous in How to Mix Drinks (1862):

General Harrison's Egg Nog
1 1/2 tsp of sugar
4 oz of fresh pressed apple cider
1 1/2 oz of Bourbon
1 egg

Tools: Cocktail Shaker,  Hawthorne Strainer, Goblet

For individual portion: Combine ingredients in cocktail shaker, dry shake for 5 seconds to emulsify the egg. Add ice and then shake hard until well chilled. Strain into a goblet and garnish with ground cinnamon.

According to David Wondrich's Imbibe! From Absinthe Cocktail to Whiskey Smash, A Salute in Stories And Drinks to "Professor" Jerry Tomas, Pioneer of the American Bar (2007), this cocktail was named after 1840 Presidential candidate Benjamin "Old Tippecanoe" Harrison who ran on a populist "log cabin and hard cider" platform. The Bourbon addition is relatively new, I read about this version in Dale GeGroff's  The Essential Cocktail: The Art of Mixing Perfect Drinks (2008) and prefer a stiffer egg nog. We recommend Elijah Craig 12 Years Aged Bourbon which seems to go well in any bourbon drink I roll!

This one is a favorite version of the holiday cocktail and can be made virgin with none alcoholic cider.

All the best to your family and friends!

Finally, a President Worth Having a Beer With...

This is a watershed moment. That is clearly stating the obvious. But folks who hang in cocktail bars are often guilty of that kind of speak, so give us some latitude.

Today is really special and inspirational. Mr. Barack H. Obama will be sworn-in as the 44th President of the United States of America. Millions of people will pack the Capital in the frigid cold waiting for the moment when he takes the Oath of Office, his hand on Abraham Lincoln’s bible, truly symbolizing how far we have come: from Emancipation to Inauguration.

Today we also say "Adios" to George W. Bush, a President with whom most Americans once said they would happily share a beer. Well, Georgie may have been a good time swigging a beer or two, but by the end of the night he became “that guy”. That guy who hit on your girlfriend, knocked over the coffee table, put you in a headlock, made inappropriate comments about your gay cousin, and naturally, toilet papered your trees! That guy who plowed his BMW across your lawn and crashed into your garbage cans as he drove off into the night. We say "Godspeed - and please get a designated driver."

Today, we have a new President, a President who is as at-home having a beer in the Billygoat Tavern under the El on Michigan Avenue over some “cheezeburgers, cheeseburgers”, as he is sampling the cheese course and a Barolo at Spiaggia, Chicago’s only four-star restaurant. Barack is a guy you can go and watch a baseball game with in the stands; he is not that guy who owns the team watching from a skybox. Barack is a guy you can go listen to jazz with at the Lenox Lounge, or watch the Knicks play the Celtics courtside at Madison Square Garden. He is a transcendental figure who is invited to share a wet one with us anytime, because we know he is level-headed enough to call it a night before we hit Arthur's Tavern for after-hours.

Today, Mr. President, the baton is now in your hand. You have our undivided attention and we are ready to serve. To kick it off, Loungerati men and women in New York will be trading their suits and dresses for jeans and t-shirts this spring, to give our time to the Prospect Park Alliance in Brooklyn. Giving back to the community where one lives is democracy in action. It is only one of many projects to help our country. We hear what you are saying and it is time to move beyond the barstool.

Oh, and Mr. President, one final note: if you are ever in NYC and want to grab a proper drink between U.N. visits, let us know. We are kind of experts at that sort of thing.

Hail to the Chief!

The Aftermath of The Salon

by Fredo

Twas' the night before Halloween and a group of loungers, artists, musicians, dancers, barflies, mixologists, and burlesque performers gathered at Galapagos Art Space for the The Salon. Some came in costume, getting an early start for what promised to be a mardi gras like weekend in New York City. Others arrived in formal attire, in their best suits, elegant dresses, and their finest duds. What occurred next can only be described in pictures so please enjoy the photo album.

I would like to personally thank my guest mixologists, Giuseppe Gonzalez and Sam Kershaw who helped make the evening an absinthe filled success. Special thanks to the Soluri brothers and JC Hopkins for doing the legwork and Galapagos Art Space for being very accommodating! DJ Swank and the gals of Sugar Shack Burlesque made the night complete!
